General Information
Donations from the community are important for maintaining and enhancing the quality of Hospice care. Support from the community, through gifts to our Foundations:
- Assures access to all families in our communities who need our care and support
- Provides counseling and support for those who grieve
- Enables our local programs to provide expanded and comprehensive services
- Provides Hospice community education and information services that shape public opinion on issues related to end of life care.
Fortunately, most care provided to patients by Hospice is covered by some kind of health insurance. Medicare, Medicaid, most major Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO's), Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO's) and other private health insurance plans covered 92% of the patients who received care provided by Hospice at Home in 2001. For the remaining 8%, the support of our community through monetary gifts, or gifts of time as volunteers, "covered" Hospice care just the same as the most comprehensive insurance available.
Medicare coverage is the model for all other Hospice coverage. Patients continue to receive the care of their physician, but receive in addition, the services of Hospice professional nurses, certified home health aides, Hospice social workers, counselors, chaplains, volunteers and the consultative services of the areas only Board Certified Hospice and Palliative Care physicians. All of these services are covered at 100%. In addition, medical supplies, equipment (i.e. beds, walkers, wheelchairs) and 95% of the cost of prescriptive drugs
related to the terminal diagnosis are covered by Hospice.
