Boards of Directors of Lakeland HealthCare and Hospice at Home Approve Integration

(St. Joseph) - The Boards of Directors of Lakeland HealthCare and
Hospice at Home announced today that they have approved the integration of Lakeland Hospice and Hospice at Home.  The new organization will be a wholly owned subsidiary of Lakeland HealthCare and will be known as
Hospice at Home, a Lakeland HealthCare Affiliate.  The decision concludes formal integration discussions that began in July of this year.

"The Lakeland HealthCare Board of Directors appreciates the willingness of the Hospice at Home Board of Directors to find a collaborative solution that will provide expanded services to our community," said Dan Hopp, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Lakeland HealthCare.  "Our new partnership will allow us to better serve our patients."

The Hospice at Home Board of Directors will remain in place as a subsidiary board.

"The Board of Directors currently in place at Hospice at Home will continue to serve as stewards of hospice, palliative, and bereavement care for area residents.  We will appreciate the insight of the Lakeland corporate Board of Directors as we navigate through healthcare reform to ensure we can continue to provide compassionate care to those we serve," said Arthur Clarke, III, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Hospice at Home.

The legal integration is expected to be complete by January 1, 2012, but the work to enhance the services at the new Hospice at Home, Lakeland HealthCare Affiliate will be ongoing.  As part of the integration agreement, strategic goals include implementing an integrated vision of hospice care, increasing awareness among underserved communities, and expanding programs.

Hamel, MD, President and CEO, Lakeland HealthCare.  "We are confident our new partnership will add significant value to the patients we serve."

Linda Beushausen, President & Chief Executive Officer of Hospice at Home, will retain that title and serve the Lakeland system in an expanded role as a Vice President. As part of the agreement, a few associates may serve in new roles; however, there will be no layoffs.

Lakeland HealthCare is a not-for-profit, community-owned health system which includes four hospitals, an outpatient surgery center, The Marie Yeager Cancer Center, rehabilitation centers, long-term care residencies, home care services, and physician practices.  Following the integration of Hospice at Home, Lakeland will employ over 4,000 associates providing clinical and support services at locations throughout southwest Michigan, and partner with over 400 primary and specialty care physicians.

For thirty years, Hospice at Home has provided quality care to people adjusting to living with a serious illness, as well as to people facing death, anticipating the death of a loved one, or healing their grief after the death of a loved one.  Hospice at Home provides services to patients in Berrien, Cass, Van Buren, and Allegan Counties.  Extending this care, Lory's Place, a bereavement and education center that builds hope and strength for every grieving family, is available to anyone in Southwest Michigan or Northern Indiana.
